Finding A Microfinance Project & Making Connections

Begin with Teamwork & Communications
If you're new to microfinance projects, my recommendation is to discuss with your club members about their past project experience first. Create and review a list of successful projects and contact people, including their current roles and inquire if it's best to add to an existing project.

For instance, if your Club has participated in a water project, or an educational project, you may want to talk with the host club about bringing in microfinance to assist those same people, strengthening your working relationship in that region of the world.

Rather than re-inventing the wheel, it's much easier to begin with Rotarians you know and trust, in a region where your club members may already be known and relationships have been established, so it's a good idea to ask your long-term club members about their experiences and who the best people are for you to contact

You can create a project short-list from there, or you can choose to join a microfinance project that another Rotary Club is proposing and is looking for additional financial support.

Especially as a newer Rotarian, it's important to respect and learn about the long-term connections, and to get to know the individuals involved, locally and internationally, who can assist you in planning and carrying out a microfinance project with your host country.

It's also helpful to find out if you have club members with microfinance and/or banking experience and invite them to join your team. The cash, finance, monitoring and reporting aspects will need to be well understood for a smooth project outcome.
