Dr. Alan Isdale
While visiting a hostel for street children,Dr Alan Isdale, a member of the Rotary Club of Westville (D9270) had his passion for managing population growth ignited.

The 'eureka moment' happened when he saw a young boy who refused to go home to his mother who lived in a single room with his other siblings. It was then that he realized that his club spent a lot of time and money supplying clothing, food and other necessities to underprivileged children and that, without proactive intervention, Rotarians in 20 years' time would be doing the same.

Essentially the problem is that there are so many children in the world, especially in developing countries and that Africa's population is expected to double in the next 20 years. When this happens, there will be insufficient resources to sustain the population.

Undeterred, Alan and Past District Governor Richard Fisher investigated a Durban-based non-profit organisation called Zoe Life. The NGO is involved in developing local communities and impacting individuals' lives. Whilst having the same objects in mind, to have a project that would prevent unwanted pregnancies, Zoe Life realized that for the project to have any real impact in KwaZulu-Natal, the men in the communities need to be involved.

So with this background in mind, Dr Stephanie Thomas, the founder of Zoe Life, initiated a programme to address the situation in the male-dominated society of KwaZulu-Natal. This new Zoe Life programme, Men Up Front, was designed and will be launched in Chesterville, near Westville. It is imperative that the link between gender inequalities and HIV/AIDS is understood and that an intervention is put in place to address it. The only way to reform a man's view on women is to reform his view of what real masculinity is, the programme was explained in its brochure. Men Up Front is a programme designed to be run with unemployed men and high school boys and addresses the definition of masculinity, self-esteem and skills development. However serious funding is still required before it can start, and costs over the first two years, to train Grade 11 schoolboys and unemployed adult men, are expected to be about R7 million.

During a presentation about the project to the Rotary Club of Umhlanga (D9270), Alan encouraged the members to join RFPD and to involve the club in at least one RFPD programme over the next two years.
