ESPANA School in El Asintal, Retalhuleu
The classroom construction is finished! Three new classrooms and washrooms (nearing completion) for the ESPANA School in El Asintal, Retalhuleu, Guatemala are being constructed in this community. The Rotary Clubs of Regina Eastview and Regina South are the lead clubs in this Ripple Effect Program project which will make a huge difference in the lives of children.

The major funding for this project is in part the result of a private donation from Rotarian David and Karen Wilson and one of their business partners.  Other Rotary funding partners include the Canadian Rotary Collaboration for International Development (CRCID) and the District 5550 World Community Services Foundation.

The community now has a school with six classrooms. The old school had two classrooms with a dirt floor and no windows. There were some desks available. The classrooms were overcrowded so some of the 100+ students had take classes outside.  In 2011 the local community had constructed 3 small classrooms. The Rotary Clubs of Regina South and Regina Eastview worked in partnership with the Rotary Club of Retalhuleu to help the community complete construction of three additional classrooms under the Ripple Effect Program.

The Ripple Effect Program is the first international world community service program developed in Rotary District 5550. The purpose of this program is to provide educational opportunities to children living in challenging environments. This program creates a "ripple effect". Education improves the lives and outlook of the students; then, through "the ripple", they affect those around them, who in turn affect others in ever-widening circles.
